Research and Reasoning

Low-income families, as of the year 2016, are defined as households that make less than $39,554 a year. Coming from a small, agricultural home-town, it’s acceptable to believe there are quite a few families who suffer from low-income. The poverty line, which is adjusted each year to accommodate inflation, is a tool used to determine if a family qualifies for government benefits such as Medicaid, food stamps, and funds for education. For a family of six, making around $32,000 is considered poverty level. Poverty isn’t always what it is perceived as: families in an underdeveloped country without a home and little to no food. Though this is pressing issue that needs attention as well, there are also local families that struggle with this adversary. When looking at these families, some might say that they have enough to sustain themselves because they have a house, a working vehicle, and food.  However, when it comes to benefits like education and health care, these local low-income families are extremely lacking. Thus, they receive government help to accustom to the funds that they don’t possess for these types of benefits. It is my personal opinion that everyone, regardless of income, should have access to something as vital as medical care. Sometimes, I believe that there should be more efforts executed to help these families. MEDLIFE (Medicine, Education, and Development for Low-Income Families Everywhere), a medical organization on campus claims to do so. An organization comprised of medical professionals and FSU students, they strive to serve these low-income families and supply them with the health care they need. It is also their opinion, that unlike ‘other organizations’ they are a unique group that surpass others in serving these families. Hoping to join this organization, it is my goal to determine the credibility of their claims. So I ask, how does MEDLIFE differ and surpass from other organizations that contribute to low-income families in need?
